Pysanky Workshop
Pysanky Workshop
March 8, 2026 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
During this Easter season join us in learning an exquisite craft of making “pysanky” to
show our solidarity and support with Ukraine.
Pysanky are traditional Ukrainian Easter eggs that are decorated with a wax resist
technique. Many of pre-Christian design elements on pysanky can be traced back to
early Slavic cultures, while others date back to the Paleolithic era. Throughout the
workshop we will dive into the history of this beautiful art form of pysanky making and
will look together at the symbols that were commonly used in order to create a
message, a wish, for the upcoming year. Then we will create our own designs with our
own messages in mind.
The technique involves drawing on the eggshells with fine lines of melted beeswax
using a traditional Ukrainian tool named a kistka, and then submerging the egg in dye.
The wax prevents the dye from penetrating the covered areas, resulting in a negative
space pattern created by the dye. This process is then repeated, with subsequent
patterns of wax and dye cycles, building a multicolored design one layer at a time.
Finally, your patience is rewarded at the end, when you gently melt and polish the
candle wax off and reveal your multilayered, multicolored design.
The process of creating pysanky is very meditative. It requires a great deal of
concentration and, while all skill levels and ages can create an original pysanka, the
recommended age for this workshop is 10+.
Bogdana Voitenko, a Ukrainian artist and an educator, will guide us through the process
of making our own pysanky, celebrating Ukrainian culture and heritage at this time when
its existence is being threatened. All the materials are going to be provided, including
hollowed out egg shells, special tools for applying beeswax, wax, aniline dyes and
inspirational design schemes for your pysanky.
For many, this meditative and communal experience of making pysanky marks the
beginning of a spring and a new cycle. Unlike other art techniques it easily becomes a
family tradition that may be passed down and enjoyed for years to come.
Bio
Bogdana Voitenko is a textile artist and a museum educator, who was born in
Hadiach, Poltava region, Ukraine, and currently resides in San Diego, California, USA.
At the beginning of her career Bogdana designed educational and socially engaged art
projects in museums in Kyiv, Ukraine (Pinchuk Art Center, Taras Shevchenko National
Museum, Kyiv, National Center of Folk Culture “Ivan Honchar Museum”). The COVID-
19 pandemic brought Bogdana’s attention to nature, as the most vital and therapeutic
force, and from then on defined her art practice. Since 2019, she works with ecoprinting
technique which allows natural pigments from plants to be transferred onto the textiles,
leaving clear imprints of leaves and flowers. Following the full-scale russian invasion of
Ukraine in February 2022, Bogdana has lived in Spain, and both the east and west
coasts of the USA. Familiarizing herself with local plants has become her way to get to
know the wider landscape, both natural and cultural. Often through collective walks with
locals, she collects leaves, and sometimes flowers or examples of soil, and prints them
on the textiles to make a unique imprint of the specific place. The prints are reminiscent
of photographs or botanical albums, yet due to upcycled textiles are always reminding
us of a human presence in this natural landscape.
